February 15, 2010. See canons of statutory interpretation, random Latin phrases through which we derive the truth. The maxim of noscitur a sociis ("it is known from its associates") tells us to interpret an ambiguous word from other words around it within the statute. In pari materia ("upon the same matter or subject"), despite its similarity however, dictates we look outside the statute at other statutes on the same subject matter. The two do not necessarily conflict, but there is, however, potential for clash.
